As shown in the image below, bacteria from dirty surfaces try to enter the vehicle as air flows in. We initially perceive this as a bad odor. Also, as the surface of the evaporator becomes dirtier, air permeability decreases.
The Cause of the Odor
Air conditioner odors are usually caused by the uncontrolled growth of bacteria and other microorganisms on the evaporator. How do these microorganisms get there? They are naturally present in the outside air and are drawn into the evaporator when the air conditioner is running. Moisture also contributes to the formation of air conditioner odors. Most of the moisture that condenses on the cold surfaces inside the system will eventually flow away harmlessly.
However, even after the air conditioner is switched off, moisture continues to adhere to some surfaces. Microbial pollutants in the air combine with this moisture remaining in the evaporator. The warm, dark, humid conditions in the evaporator provide a breeding ground for bacteria and mold, as well as creating a musty odor.
